Canvas - How do I add a video to a discussion reply?
When responding to a discussion in Canvas, you can create a video, link videos from external tools, add an URL link, embed the video right into your reply, or upload a media file to an assignment. These instructions can also be used for adding a video to pages or any other place with the Rich Content Editor.
Discussion Reply
To begin your reply, select the discussion and click the reply box.
This will open the Rich Content Editor in the reply box.
Create and submit a video in the discussion
- Use the Media icon in the Rich Content Editor
- Select the Insert > Media button or Media icon.
- Select Upload/Record Media.
- Select the Record tab.
- You will be able to select the Mic and Webcam you want to use.
- Start Recording.
- When you are done recording select Finish and Save. This will add to your reply window.
- You can add additional text or content and when you are ready, Post reply.

To use the RCE webcam recorder you must use Chrome or Firefox, Safari does not work.

These videos count towards your user files or the course files.

Do not use this feature to create videos longer than 20 minutes, in case you lose video content while trying to save.

- Use Kaltura (My Media) webcam recorder
- Select the Tools > Apps or Plugin icon.
- Select My Media.
- In the top right corner, select + Add New.
- Select Webcam Recorder.
- Click the red record button to start your recording.
- When you are done, select the square stop button.
- You can then click Use This or Record Again.
- After you select use this, the video will process and you can add a title and description.
- In the top right, click Save and Embed.
- You can add additional text or content and when you are ready, Post reply.

Link a previously recorded video
- Add URL video link using the Rich Content Editor
- Select the Insert > Link button or Link icon.
- Paste the URL in the text box
- Click the done button.
- Link videos from the resources available in Canvas (resources include: YouTube, Vimeo, TEDEd, MyMedia (your content), and Films on Demand).
- Select the Tools > Apps or Plugin icon.
- After you select the resource you want to add the video from, you will enter your search criteria.
- When you find a video you would like to use, click on the Embed button next to it.
- You can add additional text or content and when you are ready, Post reply.
