Tableau - Dashboard Standards
This article contains dashboard standards to be used in the creation of new dashboards for Tableau Server.
Templates
The Template folder in Tableau Server contains template files that can be used to create consistent dashboards across units.
Custom Color Palettes in Tableau
Tableau comes with several color gradients and color palettes. Custom color gradients and color palettes can be added by modifying the Preferences.tps file. This Tableau Help article outlines the process.
The Preferences.tps file can be found in "My Tableau Repository". If you do not know where this file is located, use the search function to locate it. Once the Preferences.tps file is located, open it with a text editor application (e.g. Notepad). Replace the text in the Preferences.tps file with the text in the Word document below. Save and close the Preferences.tps file. Restart Tableau Desktop.
Dashboard Checklist
Use this checklist while planning and creating a new dashboard. It addresses:
- Purpose
- Audience
- Data Source
- Update Schedule
- Naming
- Visualization Standards
Standard Filters
The use of standard filters within a unit's dashboards is encouraged. The document below identifies some standard filters.
Quick Reference Guide
A quick reference guide has been developed to assist viewers with navigating a Tableau dashboard. A link to this document from each dashboard is encouraged. This document is already linked to the IRAP Template in the Template folder.
Data Glossary
IRAP has created a Data Glossary to define standard academic terms. This document is already linked to the IRAP Template in the Template folder.
