Canvas - Copied Assignment & Students Were Assigned 0's

In your gradebook, if you have the Late Policy "automatically apply grade for missing submissions" checked and are importing assignments and quizzes into your course from a past semester, it may apply that grade (most commonly 0's) to your current students. When the activity is imported, it will go by the past due date and apply the late policy to your students.

If this happens, you can mass remove 0's from the gradebook with the following steps.

  1. Go to the Gradebook and the assignment column you want to remove the grades from.
  2. Select the three dots at the top of the column and locate and select Set Default Grade.

  3. You will then have a pop-up box appear.
  4. Make sure to keep the grade value box empty.
  5. Check the box next to "Overwrite already-entered grades".
  6. Select Set Default Grade

When you look at the column again, the 0's should be gone. Repeat as needed for other columns.

If you'd like to avoid this issue in the future, consider setting up a sandbox for your course without assignment due dates, or where you can update the dates before you import into the current semester course.
