Kaltura - How Do I Upload a Video through My Media to a Canvas Assignment?
This tutorial will show you how to upload a video or media file through My Media to a Canvas Assignment. Once uploaded, you will have access to your media from any Canvas course site in which you are enrolled as an instructor. When using an "Assignment" to distribute media to your class, you can set a due date. When setup according to these directions, the Assignment will be a non-graded assignment and will not count toward the final grade for the course.
Before you begin:
- Your video must be less than 2GB in size
- You must be enrolled in the course as a "Teacher"
Step 1 - Adding a Module (Optional)
- If you haven't done so, navigate to the Home area of a Canvas course.
- Click the +Module button.

- A panel will appear on the right side of the screen. Type the module name. (Example: Week 1)
- Click Add Module button.

The screen will change to display the Canvas course home page. If other modules already exist, the new module will be located below existing modules.
Step 2: Create an Assignment
- Click the Add button (looks like a "+" on the module just created).

- Select Assignment from the drop-down menu.
- Click Create Assignment.
- Type the Assignment Name.
- Click Add Item.

Step 3: Add the Media
- Click the title of the Assignment you just created.
- Click the Edit button.

- In the new Rich Content Editor, click the asterisk-shaped My Media button (or click the electrical plug-shaped Apps icon > View All > My Media)

- Click the Add New button in the upper right corner of the screen and select Media Upload from the list provided.

- Review the terms and conditions and click the checkbox next to "I agree to the above terms and conditions".
- Click the Choose a file to upload button displayed in the center of the page.

- Browse to the location on your computer where you have saved your file and select the file.
- A Window will appear that displays the upload progress.

- When the "Upload Completed!" message is received, review the video details (name, tags, etc.) and make any necessary modifications.
- Click the Embed Setting button (looks like a gear). Change the player type, size and start time to meet the needs of the assignment.
Note: Information on the various players and settings is available on Kaltura - Kaltura Video Players and Kaltura - Advanced Video Embed Options
- Click the Embed button in the upper right.
Step 4: Complete Assignment Details
A preview of your video will appear in the HTML editing window. Note: if you receive the message "Error: No source video was found - Entry in process" proceed to the next step. This message is expected. Your video is processing and will be available soon. Don't upload your media again.
- Ensure that "0" is entered in the Points field.
- If this is the first time you've uploaded media to this course site, click the Assignment Group drop-down menu and select [New Group]. When the New Group Window appears, enter an appropriate Assignment Group name and click "Add Group."
NOTE: If you've already created an Assignment Group for your ungraded media viewing assignments, select this group, and skip to Step #4 - Check the box in front of "Do not count this assignment toward the final grade"
- Ensure that No Submission is selected under Submission Type.
- Click the calendar icon and select the date when the assignment is Due.
- Click the Save and Publish button at the bottom of the page.
