D2L - specifying Respondus LockDown Browser for quizzes

Setting up Respondus Lockdown Browser in D2l

  1. From the D2L Course homepage, click Quizzes

  2. Select a quiz you want to add the LockDown Browser to or create a new quiz.

  3. To restrict users to using Respondus Lockdown Browser when taking the quiz, click the Resitrictions tab.

  4. Under Security Options check the desired Respondus LockDown Browser features:

    • Required to take this quiz: When this option is enabled this quiz can only be attempted when using the Respondus LockDown Browser. If a user doesn't have it installed they will be given a link to do so.

    • Required to view quiz feedback and results: When this option is enabled the student submission views can only be viewed by users when using the Respondus LockDown Browser. If a user doesn't have it installed they will be provided a link to do so.

      This setting provides more security if you are displaying the questions in the quiz feedback.

  5. Click Save or Save and Close.

What Students Experience (Using Respondus Lockdown Browser)

Students should go to the course and enter the quiz via Respondus Lockdown Browser. They will see the "Start" button when the quiz is open and be able to take the quiz.

Note: Respondus Lockdown Browser should be available in all the GCA laps. it is also available for download via http://www.respondus.com/lockdown/information.pl?ID=125742720. This link can be provided to students. The download link for Respondus Lockdown Browser is also available on the D2L "Help for Students" page.

What Students Experiene (If They Do Not Access the Quiz via Respondus Lockdown Browser)

  1. On the Quiz Details page, students see a notification that they need to take the quiz using the Respondus LockDown Browser.

  2. Students will then click Download Respondus LockDown Browser link.

  3. The link will open a new window and ask students to identify which operating system they are using. Students will select the appropriate one.

  4. After student select Windows or Mac, they will be asked to identify which type of computer they are using.

  5. Next, students complete the process of downloading the browser. Once finished, the student will need to log in to D2L via Respondus Lockdown Browser to take the quiz.

  6. What happens when students open Respondus Lockdown Browser:

    • The browser will automatically open to Desire2Learn where the student will then log in.

    • The menu bar, address field, start button, and system tray will be the only thing they see.

    • Students will be able to use the back, forward and refresh buttons.

    • Right clicking using the mouse is disabled and as well as certain keystrokes (e.g.: taking a screen shot, copying and pasting)

  7. Students navigate to the quiz.

  8. By using the LockDown browser, students will see the Start Quiz link.

  9. When students take the quiz:

    • The browser cannot be closed until the quiz is submitted. Additionally, students are unable to access other areas in D2L during the quiz.

    • If there is a link to another website on the quiz, the link will open in a new secure window and will not allow navigation beyond that specific page.

  10. Once the student submits the quiz, they may close the browser.

When specifying Respondus LockDown Browser for students to take a quiz, students are unable to print, copy, go to another URL, or access any other applications. Once the quiz is started, students are unable to navigate outside the quiz until they submit it. See the attached PDF for more information.
