Creating Modules and Sub-Modules in Content

Note: You must create a module before you can add topics. You can create sub-modules (modules within existing modules) to establish a deeper hierarchy.

If you want to keep your course content hidden while you are building it, set the status of your modules and/or topics as Draft.

Create a new module

  1. Select Content to navigate to the Content area.

  2. Click the image Table of Contents link in the Table of Contents panel.

  3. On the Table of Contents page, enter your new module title in the Add a module... field, which is below the Table of Contents title and any existing modules.

  4. Press Enter or click outside the field to add the module.

Create a new sub-module

  1. Click on the module you want to add a sub-module to from the Table of Contents panel.

  2. Enter your new sub-module title in the Add a sub-module... field. The Add a sub-module field appears in the area to the right of the table of contents.

  3. Press Enter or click outside the field to add the sub-module.

Edit a module

Note: Aside from adding content, you can adjust the settings for the module.

  1. Enter the course’s content area via the navigation bar. Click on the name of the module you would like to add a topic to in the left column.

  2. Click the dropdown to the right of the module name (1) or click in an area to edit the description, adjust viewing (published or draft) (2), or add restrictions (3).

Delete a module

  1. Delete a module by selecting the dropdown menu to the right of the module name (#1 above).

  2. Select Delete Module. 

Note: To remove all modules from the Table of Contents, click on the Table of Contents and select Delete All Modules.

Topics and Files in Content

Note: If you want to keep your topic hidden while you are building it, set the status of your topics as Draft.

There are a couple different ways to upload files to D2L, you can select the option or else drag and drop your files into the Content area.

Create a new topic in Content

  1. Click on the module you want to create a new topic for from the Table of Contents panel.

  2. Select one of the following options from the New button:

  3. Fill in the required fields, such as topic Title, a URL link, Instructions, or select the appropriate files you want to add or upload.

  4. Do one of the following:

    • If you are creating a new document, link, dropbox folder, discussion, or quiz, click Publish.

    • If you are adding files from My Computer, Course Offering Files, or Shared Files, click Add.


NOTE: The following items provide additional details.


Add Audio/Video Topics

Instructors can add audio or create video topics directly in the Content tool. Video topics are listed in modules with a image Video icon to distinguish them from other types of files and link topics. Users can upload video files by dragging and dropping them onto the upload target, or by browsing and selecting them from their computers. Currently an upload is limited to 1GB file size.

 


Upload Files

  1. Click on the New dropdown menu and select Upload Files from the list; Or

  2. Open your file location folder on your desktop screen, then select and drag your file(s) into the module.

  3. After you have uploaded the file, you may notice that the title of the item in the content area is the same as the file name.

  4. Edit the properties of the content item to change the title. For more information on how to do this, go to Edit a Topic.


Create a File (HTML page)

  1. Enter the course’s content area via the navigation bar. Click on the name of the module you would like to add a topic to in the left column.

  2. Click on the New dropdown menu and select

    Create a File from the list.

  3. The Create a File screen will open, then you will need to:

    1. Type your Topic’s name

    2. Type your Topic’s information

    3. Select a Saving option: Publish (available to students instantly), or Save as Draft (unavailable to students until you publish).


  4. After you select your saving option, you will be taken to the Topic screen.

Note: The “Save as Draft” option allows you to save your work, but does not display the topic to the students.


Create Links in Content (URL)

  1. Enter the course’s content area via the navigation bar. Click on the name of the module you would like to add a topic to in the left column.

  2. Click on the New dropdown menu and select Create a Link from the list.

  3. When the New Link window opens, you’ll be able to:

    1. Type in the Link’s Title

    2. Type in the Link’s URL

    3. Allow the link to Open as External Resource

    4. Create or Cancel this New Link

Add Files from Manage Files (Course File)

  1. Enter the course’s content area via the navigation bar. Click on the name of the module you would like to add a topic to in the left column.

  2. Click on the New dropdown menu and select Add from Manage Files from the list.

  3. When the Add a File window opens, select the course file you would like to use and click the Done button.
