VPN (virtual private network) - Mobile Installation Guide

How to download and install Cisco AnyConnect and connect to UW-L's Virtual Private Network (VPN).


Background:

UWL's VPN service allows any UWL associate to connect to campus remotely from any available network connection almost anywhere in the world: including from home, from many hotels, and even from within some company networks. Images shown here are from an IOS device, however the steps are similar for an Android phone.


Installation:


1. Open the "App Store" app (IOS) or the "Google Play Store" app(Android). 

2. Search for "Cisco AnyConnect".

3. Click "Get" or "Download".

Running:


1. Click "Open". You may also open Cisco AnyConnect from your home screen by pressing the app's icon.

2. Click "Connections".

3. Click "Add VPN Connection..."

4. If you're on IOS, you may be met with a prompt. Click "Allow".

5. Add the VPN Connection. Under "Description", add the name of the VPN (UW-LaCrosse) and under "Server Address" type "vpn.uwlax.edu". Click "Save".

** Your VPN has now been added to your device. Cisco AnyConnect will remember this connection for you. You will not have to repeat the previous 5 steps.

6. Connect to the VPN by clicking the button next to "AnyConnect VPN". Ensure that the "Connections" label states either "Uwl" or "UW-LaCrosse".

7a. (Standard Users) From here, AnyConnect will prompt you to log-in. Please enter your NET-ID under "Username:" and your password for your university accounts under "Password:".

7b. (Sensitive access users) Login with your NETID and password (here the description has been renamed to "UW-LaCrosse-MFA"). On the following screen you may enter either a DUO Passcode from your fob or phone, 1 for a push notification, or 2 for an SMS text message then click Continue to connect.
