Canvas - How do students use Kaltura (My Media)?
Record with My Media (Kaltura Capture)
Installing Kaltura Capture
- In Canvas, select Account in the Global Navigation toolbar.
- Select My Media
- Select Add New
- Select Kaltura Capture

- In your downloads folder, find the 'KalturaCapture' file and click Open File. - The Welcome to the Kaltura Capture Setup Wizard screen displays.
- Click Next. - The Installation Settings screen displays.
- Click Next. - The Ready to install Kaltura Capture screen displays
- Click Install to begin the installation. - A progress bar displays.
- When the installation is complete, you'll see a Completed the Kaltura Capture Setup Wizar Screen - Click Finish.

- After the .dmg file downloads, double-click the file to open it.
- In that window, click and drag the Kaltura Capture icon to the Applications folder.
- Enable privacy settings -
- Screen recording permissions - Go to System Preferences > Click Security & Privacy > Click Privacy tab at the top > In the left-hand column, click on Screen Recording > In the right column, check the box next to Kaltura Capture app to grant access to Screen Recording.
- Camera permissions - Go to System Preferences > Click Security & Privacy > Click Privacy tab at the top > In the left-hand column, click on Camera to manage app permissions > In the right column, check the box next to Kaltura Capture app to grant access to the camera
- Microphone permissions - Go to System Preferences > Click Security & Privacy > Click Privacy tab at the top > In the left-hand column, click on Microphone to manage app permissions > Tick the box next to Kaltura Capture app to grant access to the microphone
- Screen recording permissions - Go to System Preferences > Click Security & Privacy > Click Privacy tab at the top > In the left-hand column, click on Screen Recording > In the right column, check the box next to Kaltura Capture app to grant access to Screen Recording.
- Restart the application after changes are done to take effect.
Preparing to Record
Open Kaltura Capture on your device. You'll see a bar similar to below with a Red recording button, screen icon, camera icon and audio icon.
If the icon is gray with a slash through it, it is turned off (disabled). If it is blue, it is turned on(enabled). You can select between the three how you are going to record. i.e. screen, camera, and audio; screen and audio; camera and audio; or only audio.
Screen
- If you have multiple screens, click the arrow next to the screen icon to open the input settings.
- Click the arrow next to the input settings to display a drop-down menu, allowing you to select your desired screen.
- This menu only shows multiple options if more than one screen is connected to your PC.
Camera
- If you have multiple cameras, click the arrow next to the camera icon to open the input settings.
- Click the arrow next to the input settings to display a drop-down menu, allowing you to select your desired camera
- This menu only shows multiple options if more than one camera is connected to your PC.
Audio
- If you have multiple microphones, click the arrow next to the audio icon to open the input settings.
- Click the arrow next to the input settings to display a drop-down menu, allowing you to select your desired microphone
- This menu only shows multiple options if more than one microphone is connected to your PC.
Creating a Recording
- After selecting your video and audio sources, click the red button to start your recording.
- A three-second countdown begins, and then the recording starts.
- During the recording, the recording tool is minimized to the lower corner of your screen. You can move this tool around your screen if you need it in a different location.
- When you've completed the recording, click the gray square to stop. (You may use the red pause button anytime during your recording if you need take a break).
Saving and Uploading a Recording
- You'll be automatically directed to the Recording Management window, as shown below.
- You can review your video on the left-hand side, if you wish to re-record, you can select the red New Recording on the top right-hand side.
- If you're video is good to go, give it a meaningful title on the right-hand side.
- Then save and upload.

Mac (Kaltura guide with screenshots)
- After the .dmg file downloads, double-click the file to open it.
- In that window, click and drag the Kaltura Capture icon to the Applications folder.
- Enable privacy settings -
- Screen recording permissions - Go to System Preferences > Click Security & Privacy > Click Privacy tab at the top > In the left-hand column, click on Screen Recording > In the right column, check the box next to Kaltura Capture app to grant access to Screen Recording.
- Camera permissions - Go to System Preferences > Click Security & Privacy > Click Privacy tab at the top > In the left-hand column, click on Camera to manage app permissions > In the right column, check the box next to Kaltura Capture app to grant access to the camera
- Microphone permissions - Go to System Preferences > Click Security & Privacy > Click Privacy tab at the top > In the left-hand column, click on Microphone to manage app permissions > Tick the box next to Kaltura Capture app to grant access to the microphone
- Screen recording permissions - Go to System Preferences > Click Security & Privacy > Click Privacy tab at the top > In the left-hand column, click on Screen Recording > In the right column, check the box next to Kaltura Capture app to grant access to Screen Recording.
- Restart the application after changes are done to take effect.
Preparing to Record
Open Kaltura Capture on your device. You'll see a bar similar to below with a Red recording button, screen icon, camera icon and audio icon.
If the icon is gray with a slash through it, it is turned off (disabled). If it is blue, it is turned on(enabled). You can select between the three how you are going to record. i.e. screen, camera, and audio; screen and audio; camera and audio; or only audio.
Screen
- If you have multiple screens, click the arrow next to the screen icon to open the input settings.
- Click the arrow next to the input settings to display a drop-down menu, allowing you to select your desired screen.
- This menu only shows multiple options if more than one screen is connected to your PC.
Camera
- If you have multiple cameras, click the arrow next to the camera icon to open the input settings.
- Click the arrow next to the input settings to display a drop-down menu, allowing you to select your desired camera
- This menu only shows multiple options if more than one camera is connected to your PC.
Audio
- If you have multiple microphones, click the arrow next to the audio icon to open the input settings.
- Click the arrow next to the input settings to display a drop-down menu, allowing you to select your desired microphone
- This menu only shows multiple options if more than one microphone is connected to your PC.
Creating a Recording
- After selecting your video and audio sources, click the red button to start your recording.
- A three-second countdown begins, and then the recording starts.
- During the recording, the recording tool is minimized to the lower corner of your screen. You can move this tool around your screen if you need it in a different location.
- When you've completed the recording, click the gray square to stop. (You may use the red pause button anytime during your recording if you need take a break).
Saving and Uploading a Recording
- You'll be automatically directed to the Recording Management window, as shown below.
- You can review your video on the left-hand side, if you wish to re-record, you can select the red New Recording on the top right-hand side.
- If you're video is good to go, give it a meaningful title on the right-hand side.
- Then save and upload.
Submitting to Canvas
Record with My Media (Kaltura Capture)
Submit to an Assignment:
- Open your assignment.
- Select Start Assignment.
- Pick the Text Entry tab.
- On the top icons, select the plug-in icon and select View All to locate My Media.
- If you recorded and uploaded with My Media (Kaltura) locate the video in the list (does take a few minutes to process if they were recently uploaded).
- If you have not uploaded, you can select Add New on the far right and Media Upload and follow the prompts to upload your video.
- Once you locate the video you want to add to your assignment, select Embed to the right of it.
- Add any additional text or content to the assignment.
- Submit your assignment.
Submit to a discussion:
- Open your discussion.
- Select Reply.
- On the top icons, select the plug-in icon and select View All to locate My Media.
- If you recorded and uploaded with My Media (Kaltura) locate the video in the list (does take a few minutes to process if they were recently uploaded).
- If you have not uploaded, you can select Add New on the far right and Media Upload and follow the prompts to upload your video.
- Once you locate the video you want to add to your discussion, select Embed to the right of it.
- Add any additional text or content to the assignment.
- Post Reply.
