Canvas - How do I record/upload with Kaltura (My Media)?

Your lecture can easily be recorded for asynchronous learning/access (meaning students can access it whenever they want). The easiest way to do this is through My Media (Kaltura) in Canvas.

Navigate to My Media (Kaltura)

There are three ways to navigate to My Media (Kaltura) in Canvas. The first time you click My Media (Kaltura) through any of these options, you will be asked to authorize it.

  1. On your far left global navigation, select Account and My Media.
  2. In your course, select Settings go to the Navigation tab and enable Media Gallery by dragging from the bottom list of items to the top list. Click Save. Here is a video of how to Enable Kaltura My Media in Canvas.
  3. In your course, when you are on a page, quiz, assignment, etc., that has the Rich Content Editor you will be able to navigate to My Media through either the plugin icon button or the Tools>Apps.

Options to record and upload

Once you have navigated to My Media, you can upload already created videos, record directly from your webcam or download the software to record video, audio and your screen.

  • Media Upload- allows you to upload videos you have created from other programs.
  • Webcam Recorder - allows you to record directly from your computer's webcam.
  • Kaltura Capture - download or open the desktop recorder through My Media in Canvas. Use the program to record screen capture and video with audio, camera, and/or screen (either a full screen or specific area).

Sharing your videos

My Media is unique to all users. Even though you may have it enabled in your course, and can see your own videos, if students click on it they would only see videos that they created. Below are a couple of options to share your videos with your class.

  • You can either add a link or embed in a page or anywhere that has the Rich Content Editor.

  • Enable Media Gallery in your Canvas course to allow students to view an entire collection of videos.
    • To add to your course, navigate to Settings> Navigation tab > Enable Media Gallery by dragging from the bottom list of items to the top list. Click Save.

  • If you want to share with external audience:
    • Navigate to My Media in Canvas (Account>My Media). Click on the video you want to share. Locate the Share icon in the top right of the video. Click on the first link ( to highlight and copy.

    • Go to and log in at the top right. This is an external (from Canvas) way to see all videos you have uploaded through My Media.
