Okta - Initial Setup for Two-Factor Authentication

Step-by-step instructions for activating your UWL account and setting up Okta two-factor authentication (2FA). Includes setup guides for personal iPhone/iPad, Android, Windows/Mac computers, and university-issued iOS devices.

Important: Per FERPA regulations, you must complete account activation yourself — parents or guardians cannot complete this step on your behalf.

If you only need to reset your password, see Account — Change or Reset Your Password.

First-Time Account Activation

Just received an activation email from Okta? Your NetID is ready. Follow these steps to activate your UWL account and set up two-factor authentication. The entire process takes about 3–5 minutes.

  1. Check your email for an activation link from Okta. Check your spam folder if you don't see it in your inbox.
  2. Download Okta Verify on your smartphone before clicking the activation link:
  3. Click the activation link in your email. This step must be completed on a computer or laptop.
  4. Create your password when prompted:
    • Minimum 14 characters
    • Include uppercase letters, lowercase letters, numbers, and special characters
    • Use a strong, unique password not used on other accounts
  5. Set up multi-factor authentication when prompted:
    • Select Okta Verify as your MFA method
    • Open the Okta Verify app on your phone and tap Add Account
    • Scan the QR code displayed on your computer screen
    • If asked for an organization, enter: myapps.uwlax.edu
  6. Approve the test notification to verify your setup.
  7. You're all set — you can now access UWL systems securely.

Tip: Set up Okta Verify on your phone first, then add your laptop or tablet as a backup device later.

Choose Your Device for Detailed Setup

Select your device type for step-by-step setup instructions:

Why Two-Factor Authentication?

Two-factor authentication (2FA) adds an extra layer of security by requiring both something you know (your password) and something you have (your trusted device). This protects your account even if someone obtains your password through phishing or a data breach.

Best Practices

  • Enroll at least two devices (phone, laptop, tablet) so you have a backup
  • Keep your devices secure with passcodes or biometrics
  • Update your contact info in Okta if you change phone numbers
  • Never share your verification codes with anyone, including IT staff

Getting a New Phone?

Before switching devices: Remove your old device from Okta first to avoid being locked out. See Okta — Remove Authenticator Before Getting a New Phone.

If you have already switched and no longer have access to your old phone, contact the Eagle Help Desk immediately.
