Connecting University-Owned IoT Devices to UWL-Guest Wi-Fi

This article explains how faculty and staff can properly request UWL-Guest Wi-Fi access for university-owned devices through the Eagle Help Desk and provides instructions for locating a device's wireless MAC address.

Important Note: University-owned equipment must not be registered under a personal faculty or staff account via My Devices. Doing so can cause connectivity issues down the road.

If you have a university-owned device that needs access to the UWL-Guest wireless network, please submit a ticket to the Eagle Help Desk so our team can correctly register the equipment for you.

How to Request Access

Please submit an Eagle Help Desk ticket containing the following information:

  1. Department & Contact: The owning department and the primary contact person for the equipment.
  2. Location: Approximate location (e.g., building, room number, or specific area/space).
  3. Equipment Type: Device description (e.g., Smart TV, streaming media player, lab equipment, smart appliance, treadmill).
  4. Wireless MAC Address: The 12-character physical address of the device’s wireless card.

How to Find Your Device's MAC Address

A MAC address (Media Access Control) is a unique 12-character alphanumeric identifier for network hardware. It usually follows a format like XX:XX:XX:XX:XX:XX or XX-XX-XX-XX-XX-XX.

Option 1: Physical Label (Fastest)

Check the back, bottom, or side of the device. Many manufacturers print the Wireless MAC Address (sometimes labeled as Wi-Fi MAC or WLAN Address) on a physical sticker alongside the serial number.

Option 2: Device Settings Menu

If there is no physical label, power on the device, connect it to a display (if applicable), and look through the settings menu based on your device type:

Device Type Typical Menu Path

Smart TVs & Streaming Devices

(Roku, Apple TV, Fire TV, LG,Samsung)

Settings > Network (or About) > Status or Device Info

Android / Specialized Appliances

Settings > About [Device] > Status Information
