Navigate360: Sending Text Messages
Navigate360 offers text messaging functionality that can be used on a case by case basis to communicate with students.
Any text messages sent through Navigate360 should follow text messaging guidelines: Navigate360: Text Message Guidelines
Text message types
Appointment Notifications/Reminders
A student can select to receive a text message reminder for an appointment scheduled in Navigate360 (How to schedule an appointment in the Navigate App). The text will be sent 90 minutes prior to the appointment.
Individual messages to students Navigate360: Sending individual text messages
Faculty and staff can send a text message to an individual student. You are limited to 160 characters in text messages.
Group messages to students Navigate360: Sending group text messages
<100 recipients
Faculty and staff can send text messages to groups of students. If a group text message is sent to less than 100 students, students will be able to respond to this message within 90 days.
A student will not know that this message has been sent to other students, and responses will be recorded as individual conversations with each individual student.
>100 recipients
Faculty and staff can send text messages to a group of students larger than 100. Students are not able to respond to these types of text messages. If they do, they will receive a text that their message was not received. These types of messages should be used sparingly.
A student will not know that this message has been sent to other students, and responses will be recorded as individual conversations with each individual student.
What number does it appear that the text message is coming from?
Navigate360 will automatically send texts from a pool of 10-digit numbers. For this reason, we encourage all staff to identify themselves in their messaging.
If a student replies to a text message, where does it go?
When a student replies, their response will be recorded in the My conversations area of Navigate360, and the staff/faculty member will receive a notification in their email, as well as receive a notification within Navigate360.
The staff/faculty member can then respond back to the message in Navigate360, and it will all be recorded as one conversation within Navigate360.
Can a student opt out of messaging?
Yes, they can reply STOP to any text received that comes from an appointment reminder, or a text sent to more than 100 students. Their wish to not receive anymore messages via text will be stored in Navigate360. Students do have the ability to opt out of text messaging at any time. For any students that opt out or do not have a cell phone number listed in their student account, any text messages sent to them will instead be sent to them as emails to their UWL email address.
Can students opt back into texting?
Yes, the student needs to text START to the same number they sent the unsubscribed command.
