Canvas - How do I organize my dashboard?

When you first login to Canvas, you see the Global Navigation on the left hand side and Dashboard of your courses. These include courses in which you are a teacher or student. To organize your Dashboard, you can favorite courses you want to appear there. Both published and unpublished courses can be added to your dashboard.

Other courses that are not marked as favorite can be still be accessed through Courses in the Global Navigation menu. Course Cards can help you organize your courses by adding a nickname or customizing the color, which is synced with the color shown for the course in the Calendar. The Card View Dashboard also includes the Dashboard sidebar, which includes items in your To-Do list and includes a link to the global Grades page.

Tips and Tricks

  • When you favorite at least one course, the Dashboard will only display favorited courses.
  • Canvas automatically favorites new course enrollments, so when Canvas courses for a new term are created, (or published for students), they will automatically appear in your Dashboard. You can remove any unneeded courses from your dashboard by unfavoriting them.
  • Add an image to a course card in the dashboard to help your course stand out to students.

24/7/365 Canvas chat and email support is available through the help icon in Canvas or by calling the phone support for  faculty, staff and students.
